I do a lot of stuff on YouTube (Got myself up to 10,000 followers in a year ! 😀) and the way I've gotten there is by doing my own thing. I love to hear my viewers critique and just about 95% of the time, if they tell me they like one type of video better, I'll stick with that, the other 5% is me switching it up.
So, I get messages all of the time asking people to collaborate with me, but it's not really anyone who has a ton of subs, or even a channel at all. It's usually people who enjoy my content and would like to be in a video.
The thing is, I really don't work well with others, well - at least in terms of the actual creation of the video. Working well with others with things like figuring out how a graphic should look, or how the introduction should play out is different. What I mean is the process of filming.
So, I get requests all the time "Hey man, I saw your stuff, I have a great persona that would go well with yours, we should do it some time!".
This is going to sound straight forward... The way I see it is that, they get to have the fun, and I spend hours editing and doing the real work. There is no real "return". And if you say that the return is "Making someone's day". Well, I'd disagree. I play with my viewers all of the time, am ALWAYS responding to messages, and constantly keeping in touch. I feel guilty when I turn them down in regards to participating in a video, but I just clash so badly and can't help but feel like it's not worth it because there is no real return.
Also, this is not to say that when I do generate more revenue off of it, that I won't give back. No, it would be a dream of mine to have the power to launch someones career who is struggling, buy someone a capture card who can't afford it. What I'm saying is that I think I've set up an appropriate boundary for me and my fans, but I still feel guilty over it.
