Hopefully this can help you if you struggle with focus and/or where to put your time and energy.
I met up with my gf's mom today and we talked business for 3 hours. She is a very successful business owner. She isn't rich, or anywhere close. But she has no desire to be rich. And that's not some excuse, she is literally the nicest person I have ever met. She just truly loves helping people and it's never about the money.
Anyway, I've been working on testing a business idea. I was going to test and see if I could sell handmade wooden wine racks. See attachment for the one I made.
I have a background in carpentry and access to the tools needed so I can make these pretty easily. My biggest struggle was getting costs down...shipping is a killer because of the size and weight. So are wood prices.
Despite that, I was still going to test it. Profits margins I estimated to be at least $20 per sold unit.
But, my decision to move forward changed after my conversation today.
A certain member on here is very inspiring to me. He is killing it with his product. I'm obviously not going to say what it is, but I found out and compared to the wine rack, it's easier to make and wayyyy easier to ship.
So the other day I was thinking about things. I looked to my future and thought "is this what I want the next few years if my life to be, doing skilled work with wood and getting dirty, only to make a few bucks per piece?" I also wondered if it's even scalable. The time thing is another issue with the wine racks. Then I thought, "there are other businesses out there that I can do that will still require hard work and dedication, but they don't require highly skilled carpentry work and shipping hassles."
Anyway, I was telling my gf's mom this and she said "I think you know what to do." And I do, but for some reason I've been holding onto this wine rack idea. But, I'm done with it. I'm going to try and sell the one I made (just going to post about it on Facebook and see if someone I know wants it) but that's it.
And it's actually a big relief. Now I don't have to spend anymore time stressing over a business that truthfully, I couldn't see myself doing in the future.
The point is, make sure what you're working on is in alignment with what you want your life to be like. If it isn't, stop doing it now.
Saying yes to one thing means saying no to other things. So why bother spending time and energy on a business that doesn't help you create the life you desire?
Sure, it may take a little longer to reach your goals, since you'll have to start over. But you know what they say, if you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.
And if you are struggling to decide what idea to focus on, I think this is a great guide...just ask yourself if it's in alignment with your goals and what you want your future to be. If it is, go for it! If it isn't, find something else.
