I am about to start selling an eBook online -- well, 'about to' may not be the best word. Following the format of The Lean Startup, before the product is creating I need to validate that it will be a successful business proposition. That is, the least amount of effort necessary to figure out if someone is actually going to buy it.
So rather than write the book I want to start advertising for it. Changing copy, titles, and images all have a profound effect on the clickthrough rate of any particular ad, but nobody ever delves into the process of testing all of these at once. I could split test my image: run two campaigns with the same title and description yet different images and see which one gets clicked more. But what if there are profitable image/title combinations? Iterating on one facet individually would overlook that. But nobody else seems to be bringing this up, so maybe it's a case of premature optimisation.
So if I set my workflow to:
Topic A {
Run ad campaigns with Titles a, b, c + Description a + Image a
Pick the title with the highest Click Through Rate (labeled A)
Run ad campaigns with Title A + Descriptions a, b, c + Image a
Pick the description with the highest CTR (labeled B)
Run ad campaigns with Title A + Description B + Images a, b, c
Pick the image with my highest CTR and use that final permutation as my live ad
}
Repeat for Topics B, C, etc
All of these campaigns should point at a custom landing page, which I am capable of creating but if anyone has advice on a cheap service that lets me mockup tons for the purpose of iteration I would gladly choose that. This page would have my sales pitch and a purchase form. On completion of the form and at moment of purchase, the user gets redirected to another page that says "Thank you for showing interest in our product. It is not ready yet, but the moment that it is we will notify you with a discount code".
This should let me have a dashboard that shows an actual count of live, customer interest from people who were actually prepared to buy the product, if it existed. I can then pick the product with the highest pseudosales, create the product, fix the landing page to sell it properly, and then ship discount codes to everyone who tried to buy it earlier (and provided their email address).
This seems logical to me, but I would like anyone to share their input on this process as I have little to no experience in this field. I'm away for work for a week and I have a few hours each day between nightshift and daysleep to work on this.
If anyone has resources for setting up landing pages, managing email lists, creating ad campaigns, or iterating in general I would be happy to consume as much knowledge as quickly as possible.
