So as the title says it took me a while to get to this point.
I (like several others on this forum I've read about) worked a corporate job and decided it wasn't for them. I guess I should start out by saying that I did what I thought was the best thing to do for myself back in the day and got bachelors and masters degrees (in engineering) back in college. Graduated in 2003 and 2005 respectively. I got a job out of school and remember thinking this is not what I signed up for. But at the same time I was happy to finally be getting that paycheck, so I just went with it. I got married a couple years after and "was on my way". I had the job, the wife, all I needed was the kids and the house.
Anyways, after a couple 1 year stints I've been at the same job since 2008, doing a lot of mundane repetitive tasks. I also have no control. About a year and a half ago I started to get fed up with the lack of control I have in my own life and decided I was going to do something about it. The problem was that I wasn't sure how. I wasn't sure how to get an idea into a real product/service. I also had ideas but had no idea of how to execute them.
So one day I was in the bookstore and decided to buy Rich Dad Poor Dad. A T.A. back in college had talked about it back in 1999 and really urged us to read this book. So I read it and it started me down this path I'm on. I knew I was unhappy but didn't know EXACTLY why or how to change it. I had this feeling of hopelessness and didn't know what to do about it. But I found that reading book after book, first Rich Dad books, then 4 Hour work week, etc. was literally changing the way I think and I was growing. I should say another reason I started getting into this was because I had a desire to have an internet business but I didn't really know anything about it or how it work. So I also found a bunch of blogs on the subject and subscribed and also got into marketing and copywriting books, trying to learn as much as possible. I remember the first time I heard the tern "keyword research", what an eye opener.
Then I read the Millionaire Fastlane and it really resonated with me. The talk about constant learning and excelling in life and how that leads to success.....so so true.
I'm still at my job but I spend just about all my free time trying to learn and have been actually trying to do something bigger the last couple months. About 4 months ago I started a couple small niche sites with Adsense. I made some money off of them but didn't feel like just writing content on a small site and dealing with how much Adsense changes.
I kind of feel like TMF is a suped up version of Rich Dad Poor Dad.
I sit at work sometimes and hear people talking about their 401ks and checking the markets constantly and talking about 30 years from now when they retire......and think it's insane. You look forward to the weekend trading 5 days for 2 days for 30 years just to get to retirement. I've had this mentality for years and always felt that I was always going "against the grain" of everyone else.
I finally got to the point after reading the books and following the blogs for a while, where I had confidence and was learning and that not being one dimensional was key.
I have a small side business now I've been working on a lot. I get small side jobs here so it just breeds confidence.
At first I was all over the place and didn't know the direction I wanted to go. I was thinking of doing ecommerce, niche sites, authority sites, a blog, etc. Eventually I settled on web applications and apps. So I started doing a lot of research on this stuff and found that it was exciting to be learning all this new stuff, as opposed to experiencing the stagnant mundane lifestyle common with corporate office jobs. I've found even if the work is somewhat interesting it can suck the creativity and energy right out of you, just because you feel that you can and want to be doing something on your terms.
So I've been working toward this point and feel like I have momentum even though I haven't gotten too far in terms of getting paid. But confidence and perseverance is half the battle.
So I'm just posting to let everyone know how great this forum is and how great it is to have a community like that that shares similar life interests. I've learned a lot just surfing the forums this last month and will hopefully learn a lot more! I have questions and want to learn about a ways to gauge interest in a website....like using landing pages, etc. I feel like working my day job is taking away my energy and productivity for Fastlane work, so I'm trying to expedite the process, working harder and being more efficient.
Anyways looking forward to being active on the forums.
