So, I've been a forum member for awhile now since after TMF came out. I loved the book.
Since that time (2011), I've crept along in the Slowlane. Life has been good, and income has gone up ... but I'm still in the Slowlane. In fact, somewhere along the way I almost forgot the Fastlane exists.
Allow me to back up. In 2012, I took a job that involved commuting 50 minutes each way. My commute didn't end until July 2016. It was brutal. If you ever want to get beaten into submission, get yourself a house and then have to take a job with better and better pay to keep everything going. Gotta feed that money sucker, you know!
Fast-forward to the last few weeks. I've been feeling restless about my place in life. My current job is great, but we've been on a bit of a death march for the last few months, and it really wore my team down.
And then Unscripted came out. I'm not done with it yet, but I've been churning through it on my breaks at work. It was the kick in the pants I've needed for awhile. I do some freelancing on the side, but I haven't made it a regular thing. It's mostly small-time projects, and today I got wind that my current client isn't happy with the amount they paid for the website (they're a really dysfunctional group and wouldn't know value if it hit them in the face).
And then it hit me: this isn't it. Working for clients who don't understand what they're getting isn't for me. I need to create some sort of service or product, not act like a hired gun and then get disrespected by the very people you provided everything they wanted. F*ck that.
A co-worker and I were talking about "becoming a millionaire" today, and he said, "There aren't a lot of examples of people in their 40s (like me) who go on to become millionaires. You have to start young."
I find that line of thinking to be self-defeating and incorrect. So, here I am. I'm not sure where I'm going yet, but where I am is pretty much bullshit and I'm tired of it.
