Hey guys,
I'm 20 years old. I've been coming up with random entrepreneurial ideas for the past few years. Whether at school, eating breakfast, or laying in bed at night after waking up at 3am - I've been trying to solve problems. The problem is I never took them out of my head.
I just finished the book and its given me the motivation to DO SOMETHING about it.
I've got around 23 college units - and this is my first semester at "university" - and I've got to say - I'm bored as hell. I took a year off and worked for the corporate world on two continents, and I know from my experiences that I don't want to work for the man ever again. I want to be the man.
I've always been told that school will get better. Get more interesting. Year after year, it never happened. Finally, the slowlaners pitched a new one at me, "go to college" "it will get interesting there".
So I take my transfer credits from CC while I was working after high school, and get accepted to a university. I saw all these interesting courses that could be applied to my entrepreneurial goals and dreams. I'll admit that for a split second I was excited as hell. Well, that all backfired when I had to sit down with a counselor to register for classes. :eusa_naughty:
"no, you're not eligible to take business classes, you lack the general requisites"
"to get into business classes you'll have to take a third level language, microeconomics, and sociology of your choosing, then next semester you'll have to take linear algebra, then calculus, as well as a science".
My classes are mind numbing. I can't believe I'm paying 17k a semester (out of state) to have people drone on at me through 5 classes. Three of the five of my instructors are unpaid TA grad students and one of my professors just lectures of powerpoint slides that he purchased from the publisher - he could literally be replaced by a robot - or better yet, I could just learn all this nonsense online for free. I frequently fight falling asleep in class during economics or simply open up my tablet and start reading Ludwig von Mises. The other made me purchase a book (that supposedly she receives no royalties from) that costs 200 dollars. I feel like I'm being swindled and all I can focus on is my newly birthed idea.
Now, the slowlaners are back in full force; "it will get better your third and fourth year when you take interesting classes for your major". I'm being fed the same lies that I've been fed since grade school.
I've had it. I've had it with 8% tuition increases while departments downgrade school chalk to sidewalk chalk that damages my hearing every morning (BTW, whats with the chalk boards? what is this the 60's?).
As you can imagine, I've had it with waiting for slowlaners promises. I want it now.
My idea isn't sexy. It isn't an app, or an internet business, or anything like that. No. Its something that I wanted for myself, and when I googled it, not only found out it didn't exist - but found out that hundreds of internet users across dozens of forums were asking for the same thing as I.
Last week I stayed up all night and sketched out measurements onto a notebook. Conceptualized, refined, idealized.
Over the weekend I went to home depot. I spent hours sifting through materials. The roofing section, the plumbing section, the paint section - gathered any materials I figured would do.... I went home and turned my sketches into something physical and real. I test fit, duct taped, glued, and angle metered away.
This weekend, after I'm done droning through school, I'll finish my prototype and import the measurements into AutoCAD (self teaching currently). I'm also in the process of finding a Rapid Prototype Manufacturer to build me something that isn't taped and glued together. After that, well, after that I'll file a provisional patent, find a manufacturer that can capture me decent margins, build a website, and try to sell my product across as many online platforms as possible.
I believe that I have not only found a niche due to the spoken demand across the web, I believe I'm about to create that niche. I feel so good about what I'm about to do that I hope the large manufacturers come to ME after I prove my product in high demand and high in sales. And damn I feel more alive than I have in a long time.
So those are my goals - my fastlane plan. One in which I want to accomplish quickly.
Its not a sexy app worth billions flinging birds at pigs. Its unsexy as hell, and my hands reek of epoxy and my mind hurts from creating CAD.
It isn't pretty, but its a start.
