Hi there everyone!
After about a week of enjoying the inspiration and insights some are offering on this forum, I decided to register an account. I guess, I did this to force myself to keep going forward.
In my early 20's I joined university for the first time. I went to only one exam during a period two years. At some point, I started hitchhiking around Europe instead. I forgot to mention, I grew up in Germany.
With 23 I finally decided to travel the world instead of getting back to studies - I thought I could deal with that later. Traveling I made possible through some humble savings, but the deciding factors were spending a lot of time in countries with a weak currency and spending only as little as possible including sleeping outdoors, hitchhiking etc. It’s an awesome lifestyle! These years certainly shaped a large part of who I am today.
However, some years later, I started to feel that I should be able to earn a living. During that period I had also read the then pretty recent 4-hours-work-week book (MJ’s references to the same book made me smile more than once). And also met various self-employed so-called digital nomads. It gave me a lot of inspiration back then and even prompted me to create a website for testing a business idea. In the end, I did not go through with it due to the complicated logistics of importing stuff from Nepal to Europe as well as the upfront investment for merchandise that would have been required.
I finally entered university (again), but this time I was motivated and had a strong determination. Now I'm 35, holding a Master degree in mechanical engineering as one of the top students of my university - and have no clue what to do with it.
Since I just graduated (opened the access from Sidewalk to Slowlane), I am kind of obliged to work as an employee for at least a couple of years, otherwise, my degree won’t be worth much in the future.
I hope to start an online side business during the little free time I will have while being an employee. Hopefully, as many have stated before, the experience as an employee can trigger a business idea that works.
Presently, I am testing an idea I have (totally unrelated to what I studied) by advertising my landing page on Facebook. Once people go to my site, they will be offered to sign up for free beta access before the official launch of a program, which I am considering to create. If a sufficient percentage of visitors will sign up, I will go through with the idea. This would include that I have to learn how to program web-based applications in Java. Actually, so far not as many people signed up as I was hoping. I will still wait to the planned end of my advertising campaign and evaluate afterwards.
Would be great to hear from people who have been in a similar situation as I am now.
