I've a friend who does carpet and floor cleaning with his wife.

When they leave a happy client's property they ask if they'd leave a review. This is the perfect time to ask since they're delighted with the service and he's literally in front of them asking. It's hard for them to say No.

When they agree, he whips out his phone and texts them links to where they can leave a Google review and a Facebook review. He then asks them to check they received the text and that the link works.

They get their phone out, open the message, and click the link to check.

He then bids them a cheery goodbye and heads to the van with his wife, leaving the client with the phone in their hand and the review app open, ready for their gushing review.

They've been going for just over 3 years and already have 232 reviews, all geniune.

I've never setup a Google My Business listing myself, or optimised any.

I want to do this for a friend who we've got 6 little micro sites for. I'm not sure how it will work when he's got more than one site.

It's great that they are able to get so many reviews.

For the profiles there's not much you can do anymore to rank them. A lot of others will tell you do this and do that but it's quite limited on how to rank them now.

Google changed things up a few years ago and this is why you see businesses with 20 reviews outranking businesses with 300 reviews.

If you can get the keyword in the business name it helps to rank it but you will need to have this business name registered as Google will do random checks on profiles and ask for proof of the business name.

They rank based on proximity to the user and location of the area so address does matter.

Having a good website linked to the profile can help too.

Then it's mainly about getting reviews and keeping the profile fresh.

I've heard of others using CTR manipulation to help rank them but I'm not sure if this still works.

I follow people like Darren Shaw at Whitespark on LinkedIn who gives some advice about these profiles regularly.
