Licensing for SE Asia a waste of time?

Hi,

just wondered if having a licensing agreement for a certain product is a barrier to entry for competitors in SE Asia. A friend of mine wants to license US products and bring them to SE Asia (to sell them through his own channels - so no big chains). I had some doubts about it, as getting a license for SE Asia would be probably just a waste of time. People are selling fake Rolexes, Beats by Dre, Louis Vuitton.. so having a certain licensing deal wouldn't bring any competitive advantages in that area - or am I wrong? Also the legal system is undeveloped/corrupt so any competitor could just copy the product - even without a licensing agreement and without being too worried about the legal consequences. What are your thoughts?
