Hey all, I have a quick question here for everyone. I haven't been to active around here recently because my site has recently launched and I've been busy trying to get users.
Anyways, what I need a little help with is how to advertise effectively.
Background: I am running a service based website, much like 99designs. (unsure whether to say the name here). We have been live for 2.5 months and have 21 users signed up (although not very active). Our traffic has mostly come from an article on killerstartups.com as well as an article written about us on youngupstarts.
The Current Figures: Currently we have about a total of 30k visitors in those 2.5 months. However, I have a feeling much of that traffic is not targeted (considering we only have 21 sign ups). The average hits per day is hovering around 289-300.
What I Need Help With: What I need help with is figuring out how get more (targeted) traffic which will hopefully lead to more sign ups. Also, where should I try advertising to get more solid results? Or am I doing the right things, just not executing right?
The problem is that the site needs users to thrive. All freelance job sites do. We have the atmosphere and the service that is going to help people, just no the amount of users.
What We've Tried:
Thanks for reading this rather long post. I will be more than willing to PM the link to the site for anyone truly interesting. I was a little nervous about posting it in the open here.
Thanks again!

What We've Tried:
Google adwords (tested using around $20).- Not many results. Around 5 clicks. Possibly doing something wrong here. Currently researching.
Twitter- Okay results. But not many followers (around 5 sign ups at the beginning.. tapering off to none)
BuySellAds- We have bought two 125x125 ads for a month to see how that works out . Currently at around 9,000 impressions with 5 clicks (a measly .05%) CTR.
Site 1: 1,200 impressions. 2 clicks. CTR .16%
Site 2: 8,394 impressions. 3 clicks. CTR .04%
Site 2: 8,394 impressions. 3 clicks. CTR .04%
Blog commenting- Unsure of how this is working out. We are trying to post helpful comments with only a link to our site in our name (Advice from Gary Vaynerchuk.)
Promotions- Tried giving away free items in hopes that would draw in more users. Seemed to work okay, advertised in the freebie sections of 2 forums. (digitalpoint and talkfreelance)
Forum Posting- Posting in forums (such as the ones above) with a link to site in signature and avatar that pertains to our site.
I think that site has immense potential. Although it does have its naysayers, like most any service. I feel that I am doing the right things, however my execution is what's killing me. From what I have learned from this site and others is that execution is everything.Promotions- Tried giving away free items in hopes that would draw in more users.
