Hey guys and gals.
I haven’t been on a forum in years. Everything seems to be moving to Reddit so I’m glad I found this place. I found a thread that mentioned Starter Story: Learn How People Are Starting Successful Businesses on which an entrepreneur had recommended Millionare Fastlane. Decided to read the book now I’m here. Still going through the notable and gold threads.
Caught in a Money-Time Trap
I have issues. Most of them revolve around money and time. Looking back, I made some shit decisions.
My wife and I owe money.
We make a lot of money.
We try to live modestly with our daughter.
We work for money so we can pay off the debt.
I work 40 hours a week as a software developer on a salary. I enjoyed the software startup life but moved to corporate because the salary was better. I miss helping people.
My wife works over 40 hours a week but is salaried.
We have a few hours with our daughter after work every night, and then my wife (usually) does more work from home.
We try to make sure we can spend as much time with our daughter on weekends, though my wife will usually need to work on holidays so no 3 day weekends.
We have no family to help watch our daughter during the day and childcare is expensive.
We have no time to do basic things like yard maintenance and laundry. (Our daughter, of course, takes priority over those things.)
Finding time to cook has been a nightmare. Fast food happens more often then I‘d like.
Most of the debt is student debt and would therefore persist if we declared bankruptcy.
Additionally, my wife’s degree and lack-of-bankruptcy are required for her career.
Here’s the kicker: My wife is preggo and will be on mat leave in 6 months, so we’re looking at about a 25% drop in income for a next year.
We have already started preparing for this. Let our housekeeper go. I’m selling my car to pay down some of our larger monthly bills.
Where I Want To Be
Obviously, things have to change.
Reducing bills is no longer an option. I refuse to raise my kids in an apartment, and that would only save us $400 a month.
My wife helps people. I miss doing that. So that leads me to increasing my income.
My first thought is to start a SaaS company as I do have experience working for SaaS businesses. I know software dev already.
The software company I work for has a contract saying that they basically own any workproduct, even stuff done outside of work ours. This would be a legal issue, though I’m not sure they’d enforce it. Finding a problem to solve is another big issue.
Software development and The Millionare Fastlane are both focused on solving problems. As a software developer, though, I don’t really have many problems as most have already been fixed. I don’t have any hobbies that I can turn into a SaaS business.
How do I tune my ”fastlane frequency“ to the problems that can be solved using this business model specifically?
“Wait, how did you write this whole post if you’re so out of time?”
I’m actually on vacation. I’m using my vacation to write a book to help people organize their software-development passions. I’m was hoping it might help with some passive income. After reading TMFL, I’m doubting it will help unless I can get more hours to marketing it and am now procrastinating at it.
That’s a long way of saying “Hello”.
TL;DR:
Hey guys, Hoping to learn a bunch from these forums! Can’t wait to chat.
edit:
Updated title to be less morbid.
