Since I’m getting a few requests for this I figured I will just start a thread.
A mindset: A collection or model of attitudes, thoughts, cognitions, beliefs and feelings that ultimately manifest into behaviors.
This is sometimes the only difference between someone who is obese and someone who is normal weight. Their eating habits and eating behaviors are different so that must mean that their mindset is different.
Think about it. Are normal weight people all over the place successfully resisting the temptation for that large pizza and 2 liter bottle of Coke? Do they really have that much will power? Are they really winning a war? OR could it be that normal weight people don’t interpret food the same way overweight people do? Could it be that there is no war going on? Could it be that their attitude towards food is different?
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not advocating some pop psychology. A mindset is something very deep. I’m not saying “Think positive and lose weight!†or “Use positive affirmations!†or “Use the secret universe law!†I get it. This shit is hard. Losing weight is tough. Sometimes no amount of reasoning or positive thinking keeps us from changing our eating habits. We know we shouldn’t eat all that junk food yet we do it anyways. But what I am advocating is for those who are having weight issues to take a closer look at the driving force of their behaviors or eating habits; their mindset.
The same goes for wealth. If you are broke look at your mindset. This is one of the reasons why I think TMF is special, it addresses our mindset regarding wealth, entrepreneurship, health and time.
Socrates once said “Eat to live not live to eatâ€. There are two mindsets exposed here. Live to Eat= Gluttony, overindulgence and Unhealthy Foods and Eat to Live= Healthy foods and small portions.
Obese Mindset
-Food is the highlight of the day.
-I use food to make me happy and feel good.
-My body was designed to take in large amounts of unhealthy fats and sugars.
-It’s good for me if I eat until I’m full.
-I think about food every 2 hours.
-Food is exciting.
Normal Weight Mindset
- My thoughts are preoccupied somewhere else other than food.
-My body was designed to take in small amounts of food.
-There are more pleasurable things to do than to eat food.
-I think about food when my stomach starts grumbling.
-Food is not that exciting, after all its just matter you put in your mouth to convert into energy.
-Being skinny and healthy in the long run makes me happy more than a short -term indulgence in a snickers bar.
Obviously this is very simplified. The human mind is very complicated. But it just gives you an idea of just how differently skinny and fat people experience reality and how they perceive food.
A good exercise to think about mindsets about food is this: What if you forgot what all foods tasted like and if you lost your ability to taste food and its pleasures? What would your eating habits be like? Would you constantly be preoccupied with food? Would you really eat a whole large pizza if it had no taste?
Once you successfully change your mindset all of a sudden you will find that you are ok with drinking just water instead of that 12oz can of Coke. You are okay with just having an apple and an orange for lunch. Your thoughts will be preoccupied with other things in life instead of Fast Food and Junk food in large amounts. You won’t have these huge cravings for trash because your mind won’t perceive food as that pleasurable. You won’t have a voracious appetite. Food doesn’t dominate your life; it just becomes a tool to keep your body going and in shape.
It’s almost like a catch-22. You eat a lot of unhealthy food then you feel guilty and worthless then you repeat step 1. You eat smaller portions and eat healthy then you find that you feel good about your progress then you begin to feel more excited and motivated.
Seriously you don’t weight loss pills, and weight loss shakes, and goofy machines bought on “as seen on TVâ€. This is why diets never work for some people because they never address this mental foundation regarding food and fitness. They never change how they react to food and how they perceive it. They diet for 3 days to a week then go back to their old eating habits.
Remember your mindset determines your habits and behaviors which ultimately determines your process.
So hopefully this helped you somehow. Remember you can change your mindset to improve other areas in your life too: communication skills, public speaking skills etc. :icon_super:
