I just got back from one of the wierdest, and neatest weekends of my life. haha...
I've been financially strapped the last 12 months, so we've been trying to save a few bucks wherever we can --- So on Friday I packed up the wife & kids, hitched on our camper -- and we set out for a good old fashioned Grizzwald-style weekend camping trip!
We left in the afternoon, and I was charging up the mountain for 2.5 hours of heavy hauling, trying to make sure I got to the campsite in time to get a spot when all of the sudden I lost power on my truck going up hill. I was about 20 miles from my campsite when I scrambled to find a place to pull over, like a pilot who just lost both engines -- looking for a place to land... And luckily a rare pullout appeared on my left side, just as I was down to 15 MPH. I knew it was going to be bad to break down out in the middle of nowhere like this, because there was no cell phone service at all and few people.
I pulled into the pullout, popped the hood, and within 2 minutes of standing there peering into the engine -- a white minivan pulled over with a man & woman, who immediately offered to give my whole family a ride back to the nearby hot springs resort. We jumped in their van, and the guy *MUST* have been a Fastlaner, because he didn't even know what day it was.... He said "Oh ya, it is Friday I guess! haha" -- when I was telling him that we had planned to camp for the weekend...
After getting dropped off at the resort by the nice couple, we ran into a woman in the parking lot who worked there and my wife immediately began telling her about our problem, while I called for a tow truck now that I had cell service. She must have been the manager, because she marched the wife & kids inside -- and even though they were completely sold out for the night, she gave us a cabin they had outside the resort for 50% off the usual price. This was awesome considering we were 100 miles from ANYWHERE and it was getting dark! The tow truck driver showed up 30 mins later and told me not to worry, that he'd get my truck & camper, and haul them to a reliable mechanic, and the tow would be covered by my roadside assistance...
That night we ate dinner in the resort lodge where we ran into the same nice couple from earlier in the lounge. We probably racked up around a $60 bill -- and when we asked for the bill, the waitress said that it had already been taken care of, and the people who paid for us wanted to remain anonymous. The gesture nearly brought my wife to tears. We don't know if it was the couple or the management of the hotel or some other secret benefactor?
The next morning I was picked up by the mechanic who fixed my truck and put me back on the road for a grand total of $35.00, which is the cheapest repair bill I've ever had... Especially from a mechanic who picked me up from 30 miles away! That was about an hour of his time to-and-from, right there!
Anyway, after all of this -- we went camping for the 2nd night of our trip and had a great time as planned. I'm not much of a spiritual person, but I can't deny that someone or something was looking out for my family this weekend!
Cheers,
