After dabbling in internet marketing for a number of years, then transitioning to full-time about two years ago, one of the most valuable lessons I learned is the power of the customer list. As an example, a simple email promoting an under $100 affiliate product earlier this month earned our company almost $10k in commissions over the course of a few days. My total time invested in talking to the product creator, testing the product, and writing and sending the email to our list was two hours max.
Had I learned the power of the list earlier than I did, I would no doubt be further along now than I am.
I have a friend who has been struggling with internet marketing for years. He constantly bounces from one thing to another, and one of the things I see him do several times a year is start list building, then cancel his autoresponder service because he isn't using it. Had he kept his first autoresponder account and continued to build his list, even if slowly, and even if he let the list go stale, he would still have a viable asset.
Don't underestimate the power of the customer list.
