Hello Fastlane community,
I was hoping to throw an idea out there and see what you all thought about it. Quick background: I am a Big Ten school Marketing/Entrepreneurial management student, and a longtime lurker of this site. This board has proved to be an invaluable source of information and truly inspirational for a young aspiring entrepreneur like myself. I found MJ's book from a post on LamboPower.com and have had a new perspective on business (and opportunity seeking) ever since.
I love taking on new projects and I may have found one. I am looking for some advice or criticism about turning this into a successful and profitable website/blog/etc.
-------------------------
A couple months back my friends and I (slightly intoxicated mind you :cheers were playing around with a ping pong ball and came up with a simple, entertaining and extremely addicting game. Over time I began to show more and more friends, some at different schools, and develop new rules to make it a 'rewarding' drinking game. Everyone that has played has loved the game and passed it onto their friends. The concept is so simple that I was positive that I could find other stories/blogs/videos/information about it on the internet, but to my surprise extensive searching has come up with nothing. If it exists, it certainly isn't being exposed to a large audience.
What I would love to do is setup a network of social media channels promoting the game, all linked together. I feel super confident in my ability to drive traffic with meaningful and entertaining content ie blog posts, events, videos, etc. But I have VERY little experience with web design, monetization through SEO and other internet marketing techniques. I have some experience with Google AdWords.
Because of the game's simplicity, you literally do not have to buy anything. You need at least one ping pong ball (although certain brands bounce better then others), a table with a smooth surface (wood works best, size doesn't matter because it adds to the challenge), and a minimum of two players. As a result, I have no real unique products I can sell on the site. That is why I would like to capitalize on the traffic.
*In the future, I could easily see this turned into a mobile app. Clothing, branded pong balls and tables as well?*
It is a game of skill, attention and of course, luck.
EVERYTHING MYSELF?
As a College *business* student, I have access to a HUGE database of resources to learn design, everything from step-by-step video tutorials to books online. I also get an awesome discount on the Adobe CS5 master collection (~$250 I believe). But I don't NEED to learn to write code to get this started. Besides, this learning process could cost me a whole year that I could be promoting the game.
So where should I start? Facebook page, Youtube videos, wordpress blog? Overall this is just for fun, I would love to share it with more and more people and see how big of a presence I can make.
Thank you for taking the time to read all of this. Please let me know if you have any further questions I could answer. Otherwise, any input or suggestions would mean a lot to me!
