OK, a disclaimer here: We have a 2 year old who LOVES LOVES LOVES Mary Poppins (the movie).
We've probably watched it over 100 times this year (no exaggeration).
After a while, you start to notice things you didn't see/hear the first few dozen times.
For instance, here's a lyric from a recent movie Little Mermaid (Ariel, the mermaid, sings about the human stuff she's collected):
OK, she longs to be on shore, walking, dancing. Neat idea.
********
Now, here's a lyric from Mary Poppins (when Papa Banks takes his kids to where he works-- a bank):
Remember, these lyrics were being sung to 7-8 year old kids in the movie (the same demographic that is listening/watching the movie).
I find this amazing.
And encouraging.
Yes, the focus in the first quote (Ariel) is collecting stuff, and wanting *more*-- and the focus of the second quote (from a movie 30 years earlier) is to save, and the power saving-- and money in general-- gives you.
Do you recall other Disney movies that did this?
There are other, very important lessons in the movie (the value of tuppence). If this thread takes off, I'll include my additional thoughts on what Disney was trying to say (or, at least, what I've gotten out of this by watching it so many times!).
It's said one of the songs in this movie was Walt Disney's favorite of all the songs he'd helped produce. It's not the one above-- but it ties in w/it. And once you hear the song--and see it from Disney's perspective-- it explains a LOT about Disney's incredible empire-- and his techniques for getting it.
Techniques, which, even in this day, are extraordinarily Fastlane.

Ariel the Little Mermaid said:Look at this stuff
Isn't it neat?
Wouldn't you think my collection's complete?
Wouldn't you think I'm the girl
The girl who has ev'rything?
Look at this trove
Treasures untold
How many wonders can one cavern hold?
Lookin' around here you'd think
(Sure) she's got everything
I've got gadgets and gizmos aplenty
I've got whozits and whatzits galore
(You want thingamabobs?
I got twenty)
But who cares?
No big deal
I want more!
I wanna be where the people are
I wanna see
Wanna see 'em dancin'
Walkin' around on those
(Whad'ya call 'em?) oh - feet
Flippin' your fins you don't get too far
Legs are required for jumpin', dancin'
Strollin' along down a
(What's that word again?) street
Up where they walk
Up where they run
Up where they stay all day in the sun
Wanderin' free
Wish I could be
Part of that world
OK, she longs to be on shore, walking, dancing. Neat idea.

Now, here's a lyric from Mary Poppins (when Papa Banks takes his kids to where he works-- a bank):
The Bankers said:If you invest your tuppence
Wisely in the bank
Safe and sound
Soon that tuppence,
Safely invested in the bank,
Will compound
And you'll achieve that sense of conquest
As your affluence expands
In the hands of the directors
Who invest as propriety demands
You see, Michael, you'll be part of
Railways through Africa
Dams across the Nile
Fleets of ocean greyhounds
Majestic, self-amortizing canals
Plantations of ripening tea
All from tuppence, prudently
Fruitfully, frugally invested
In the, to be specific,
In the Dawes, Tomes
Mousely, Grubbs
Fidelity Fiduciary Bank!
Now, Michael,
When you deposit tuppence in a bank account
Soon you'll see
That it blooms into credit of a generous amount
Semiannually
And you'll achieve that sense of stature
As your influence expands
To the high financial strata
That established credit now commands
You can purchase first and second trust deeds
Think of the foreclosures!
Bonds! Chattels! Dividends! Shares!
Bankruptcies! Debtor sales!
Opportunities!
All manner of private enterprise!
Shipyards! The mercantile!
Collieries! Tanneries!
Incorporations! Amalgamations! Banks!
You see, Michael
Tuppence, patiently, cautiously trustingly invested
In the, to be specific,
In the Dawes, Tomes
Mousely, Grubbs
Fidelity Fiduciary Bank!
