Hi, everyone!
This will be my first official thread on this wonderful forum. I just discovered it two days ago and have been going through tons of old threads/posts. Tons of great information, I've been even copying into a Word DOC posts I really.
So, a little bit of myself,
-23
-massage therapist for 2 years
-living in a major city
-was originally studying business years, dropped out after a year(depression) and ended up going to mt school, because I believe as someone who has suffered with anxiety for years it really does help
-work currently at a luxury spa that caters to people making 100,000 plus (wanted to work at somewhere more health oriented originally, but luxury spas pay the best)
I do believe I am great at massage, even though I haven't been in the business for long, but because as an INTJ I enjoy researching and paying attention every single detail. I have had many clients tell me they have been getting massages for over twenty years and I have given them one of their best massages. Most of my clients: doctors, vice presidents, marketing executives, nurses, ceos, ect... However, I know I can't be the one giving massages forever(too physically demanding and mentally draining).
I have thought about opening up my own massage place and hiring employees one day, but in some ways I feel that the massage industry is becoming over saturated with membership clinics like Massage Heights, Massage Envy, ect... and it's very hard to compete with those places. I used to work at a membership clinic and the technicians are so underpaid that it's hard to even make a decent living, so that's why I couldn't ethically open up a massage franchise myself.
However, I do know that with the rise of the membership clinics, the massage industry has become oversatured and it's VERY difficult for small businesses to compete. Almost all the therapists I know who have been in the industry for over 10 years have said the industry is going more and more downhill.. with the rise of the chains.
Another passion I also have is vintage/thrift store shopping. I have an act for finding really great quality/interesting jewelry, sweaters, ect. I used to even post a lot of my looks on Instagram and would get positive feedback and many of my friends always ask me to take them thrift/flea market shopping with me. People always compliment me on my vintage jewelry (I probably found it for 2 dollars at a thrift store). I have a friend who is about to graduate from a top art college in the country said she would like to join forces if I wanted to open a shop (she's a great thrifter/illustrator/writer). But... maybe doing it by myself would be better, since that would be another person I would have to split all the profit with.
I have never actually sold anything online. I don't know how shops go about getting those first few purchases. The reason I say that is because I never buy from buyers without any feedback, let alone less than a 1000 almost all positive reviews, but that could just be me... I don't know if this industry could be fastlane, since time is a factor and I only have so many hours to shop, but I feel like I could recruit and give people a percentage of items sold(consignment pretty much). However, I don't know much about the clothing industry and many people (on forums) say it's difficult to compete anymore since everyone is dropping prices ridiculously low... If I were to sell, Etsy would be my main platform. However, I am open to Ebay, ect...
My boyfriend graduated from with a programming degree around 2005. He never really used his degree, since he had to help his parents with their their business (convenience store) and they retired this year. However, he still remembers a lot about programming(graduated with honors at the time). He knows that the computer industry is always changing but he's will to take the time to relearn anything forgotten and learn more about the current programming, likes apps and whatnot. The reason I brought this up is because he said he could help me develop an online business. I was thinking about making a street style fashion blog dedicated to fashion from the area (northern virginia/dc/richmond) area. I don't believe there are that many...I would go around taking pictures of looks I like and give people my business card to see their look on my website. On the page I was thinking about selling vintage jewelry, consigned items, ect... as well or would it be a bad idea to combine both. However, I don't really want to waste time with this is too much work for too little pay off.
I've been hearing a ton about Ali Baba on this forum. I remember a thread about someone having a sample of their sunglasses done from from one of the manufacturers and had a good experience with the process. However, I don't know anything about actually designing clothes, but I am good at spotting quality items at thrift stores/flea markets/ect... I just know what looks good, just not making it. I know I could get my boyfriend to build me a site, but I have no clue what I should focus on.
Back to the heathcare industry I have also thought supplements would be an interesting venture as well... ones meant for relaxation, energy, depression, ect, but I feel like than I may need research testing done(not really sure, but I know this would be expensive if it was required).
I know some of you might flame on me for writing too much, but I'd rather more of the details be out there so you get a better idea of my situation. Any suggestions on improvements or a different way to approach something or which ideas to totally scrap please let me know. I am open to anything! I feel like I just have have so many ideas, but not enough action/focus. On the INTJ forums I noticed this was a common issue among us! lol
