Media Is Power. And Now, Anyone Can Wield It.
In a world where everything must be sold (products, services, even yourself) media is the ultimate leverage. Why?
- Because it scales infinitely.
- It builds trust automatically.
- And it doesn’t require permission.
Take the New York Times in the lead-up to the Iraq War. They ran front-page stories claiming Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. The reports leaned heavily on anonymous sources tied to U.S. intelligence and exiled Iraqi groups.
Those claims? Mostly unverified. Often flat-out false.
Dissenting voices inside the intelligence community were ignored. But the headlines gave political cover to launch a war under false pretenses.
Then came the internet.
Now, anyone with a phone and a point of view can publish to the world. The cost of distribution has dropped to almost zero. The supply of content has exploded. The rules have changed forever.
Just ask Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying. The husband-and-wife professors were ousted from Evergreen State College after refusing to comply with ideological mandates. So, they started The Dark Horse Podcast to keep teaching on their terms.
Their book A Hunter-Gatherer’s Guide to the 21st Century has thousands of reviews and a 4.6-star rating. And they’ve appeared on Rogan more than once.
No institution needed. Just ideas and bandwidth.
You no longer need approval. You just need attention.
Better yet, weird is welcome. On billion-person platforms, niche isn’t fringe, it’s valuable. Whether you’re selling old LEGO parts or rewriting economic philosophy, there’s an audience waiting.
For example, in 2000, out-of-work programmer and LEGO fan Dan Jezek launched BrickLink. It's a marketplace for LEGO parts. In its first full year, it processed nearly $900,000 in sales. No investors. No ad buys. Just passion and code.
By the time Dan passed in 2010, BrickLink had facilitated over $50 million in transactions. Today, it’s the global hub for LEGO resale and was acquired by LEGO itself in 2019.
Your audience decides now. Not institutional gatekeepers.
One strong idea, well-distributed, can outcompete entire companies.
The takeaway?
Media is power.
And Fastlaners learn how to wield it.
