Before I read the Fastlane, a friend and I made an Android app to solve a problem. The first version was pretty crappy, and it's out right now over here:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aheadstudios.talkalytics
A short story:
One time I was texting this girl I was flirting with, and it was still the beginning stages even though I was super excited to get to know her so I had to play it cool. She texted me, and I got really antsy and wanted to reply back right away. But I knew that it doesn't look so cool if I just sit by the phone and text back instantly every single time. So I had to scroll up and see how long she usually takes to reply, and space my replies accordingly.[1]
Then I had a light-bulb moment, why don't I make an app where all these stats could be aggregated?
What now:
My friend and I made the app above, and it was pretty much the first thing we ever made for anyone so we made a lot of mistakes. We decided to use ads because we were scared people wouldn't download it if it wasn't free and we only told a few friends and family members because we were scared our app wasn't good enough for the masses yet. And honestly, it still isn't.
We're working on launching a completely overhauled second version soon, which is supposed to be a lot better and with many more features. I'm also thinking of making it free to download with no ads, but pricing it at $1.99 to unlock all the features (you'll only be able to look at the number of msgs sent/received in the free version).
Now I need ideas for marketing this app. How should I approach it? Are there specific online communities that may go crazy for something like this? What do you guys think? Also, any ideas I can make this more social/leverage-able? Any generally helpful comments would be appreciated!
Footnotes:
[1] I know this is extremely childish, but if I felt this way there's gotta be at least a million people out there feeling the same way. This was enough to satisfy the N in CENTS in my head.
