I just posted a video by Gabor Maté to the Mental Health, Depression, ADD Discussion Thread:
This video is mainly about addiction, that's why I put it into that thread. But towards the end Gabor Maté also talks about addiction to power, and this made me think about something.
Oftentimes in media, movies, music and so on people talk about the rich and powerful as if having money and having power are somehow connected. And on one hand this might be true: the more money you have, the more power you have - whatever that vague term may mean. But what, to me, is absolutely not true, is the picture these words - rich and powerful - paints: that people who are, or want to be, rich want power.
Sure, there are people who want power. But I am of the belief that many, if not most, people who are passionate about financial freedom couldn't care less about power, they want a happy and free life, not to have power over other people. This is in no way meant to be seen as facts, it's just my personal view. But I'm a bit tired of that cliché of the evil rich man. Are there evil rich men? Sure. There are also many evil poor or middle class men, though. But I, for one, don't give a F*ck about power, but I do give one about financial freedom and I am sure there are many many more like me. Not to mention how many truly want to help other people and either become rich by doing so, or do so after becoming rich.
Just some thougts I had after watching that video.
