Greetings everyone, so glad to be part of the forum.
There's so much to learn here that most others don't realize.

A quick of background: I am 19, and have been writing music on computers for 7 years.
For a long time, I had chronic self-doubt. I didn't believe I could succeed in music, even though there's no reason to think otherwise. After all, I had been given a head start in everything else, except learning the mindset that I needed. This alone changed everything.

Take a look:

2010: Won a composition contest for my age group (under 16), the prize was free copies of digital music software for the entire school. Unfortunately, it wasn't the software I used specifically, so the prize was essentially useless...

2011: ...Until I met my millionaire mentor because of it. Intrigued, he got into contact with my music instructor to see if we could meet. This man was a successful entrepreneur and local musician, and apparently the only other person in town that wrote music on computer like me. Meeting this guy was huge, because he opened up a whole new world to me that I was not even remotely aware of - the freedom of time he had.

2012: Started a mosh pit at my high school talent show when I performed my freshman year.
This might work, I figured.

But I still wasn't that serious about what I did, despite gaining a lot more recognition after this performance.

I would get better at writing every year, but only marginally. I was too busy F*cking around and watching the rise of other EDM superstars that were just a few years older than me (i.e. Madeon, Porter Robinson).

2013: Remember that software that I won from that contest? I ended up switching to that software - And began giving seminars at my old school to encourage people younger than me to start writing music.

After some time, myself and millionaire mentor formed an after school program to teach this software. We had computers donated to us from a local Govt. association that would have thrown them out otherwise. We installed the copies I won in the contest 3 years ago on these computers and started teaching. Our project ended up becoming one of the few programs in the entire USA that taught this software to this age group.

Also at this time I started to realize that a degree in music was bullshit, as people in this industry only care about your portfolio work. So, I started to focus on developing a portfolio. This was also at the time when I discovered 7 Habits, Bold & Determined, Think and Grow Rich, etc - which immensely shaped my opinions of the world around me.

2014: Kept up the music teaching, but started to not like it as much anymore. Bad students and I wanted to succeed in the industry myself...I didn't want to get stuck as a music teacher forever.

Mentor & I started to talk with a major distributor of MIDI Instruments to see if we can get an early-education course written for music composition with this particular software.

2015:

Early Summer - Talks with MIDI instrument distributor began to become serious, and we both set out to write the course. Concept fell apart because mentor + I are both A-Types and disagreed heavily with each other.

Late Summer - Burned hard on a "business internship" at a local business incubator that ended up just being slave labor essentially. Made good connections but also learned to not trust people so much.

Fall - First semester in college to make parents happy, knew more about business than the professors did. Head of the program didn't even own a business.

2016:

Spring - Second semester at a different college, this time studying music online. Just to get my parents to shut up. "Dropped Out" afterward.

Also started working for web company, started to learn web development and can build my own monetizable sites now. This was extremely valuable.

Summer - Heavy depression. I hadn't written much music over the last few years because of discouragement, parent's influence to not go into music, etc...Knew I needed to make a change.

NOW: I MADE CHANGES

Moved out of parent's house, living with roommate and really learned what it takes to live on my own - I realized it wasn't that hard. I didn't need a full-time job, and that I had enough experience in my field to make up the difference from freelancing (music composition projects).

So, why did I decide to share with you my life story?

There was no reason to think that I couldn't be successful in music. The capability was there all along.

In the matter of a month or so, I have been writing a new song every day, and have been involved in an amazing music composition project with a local entertainment company...among another dozen amazing opportunities.

It's all in the mind, and I am consistently pushing to make things better.
(Special thanks to @AndrewNC and his stuff)

So, what's next?

I will likely post a progress thread with goal, more details about what I do etc later...
For now, I am glad to be part of the forum, folks.

I am not as seasoned as the other guys here, but I am always looking for ways to help encourage other members who may be from a creative background.

Back to work. Peace.
