My plan:
To self-publish really good books outside of my fulltime job (fiction and/or non-fiction) and create a good stream of income. Quality is very important to me. I don't want to be part of the "clearance bin."
Status:
Two years ago (yes, two years!), I started writing a non-fiction book on a topic for which there tends to be wide interest, but for which there is really only one other comprehensive guide. There are a lot of other crappy books on the topic, but mine is written to be an excellent guide, just like the original.
The thing about that comprehensive guide:
- It's missing a bunch of stuff that I think is valuable
- It was published in 2011; while most of the content is still relevant, there are some things that are outdated.
Last week, I started to get right back into my book, but found something that really bugged me.
For the part of the book that discusses the same things (the intro/background/etc) as the other comprehensive guide sounds, the books sound too similar. This is not surprising, as I learned the craft from the comprehensive guide, and there's only so many ways to write this type of book!
Now I'm debating whether to scrap it, or to finish and publish it.
