I have been a seller at Amazon and Ebay for the last 3 quarters.
I recently checked in with Ingram Book Company- a major distributor of books. Once they got my sales tax id and other documents, they let me in at ipage.
They have a discount structure, where 1-9 books, you get 35% off the SRP, and the most discount you can get is 43% off the publisher SRP.
For pretty EVERY item I have seen in their wholesale catalog, the amazon sell for price is equal to or lower than the SRP discounted at 40%. Therefore, if you sell it at the Amazon price, even at FBA, you will lose money.
The cost of buying the products and shipping them to the customer is equal to or higher than the revenue generated from sales.
For Instance: ISBN 145972352X
SRP = $22.99
35% off SRP = (22.99*.35 = 8.05 , 22.99-8.05) = cost of $14.94 per book
Amazon Price(FBA) = 18.75 free shipping - approximately 4 dollars shipping cost = 14.00
Gross profit = LOSS
