Howdy ya'll. That is how we say it in the land of Okies, home to ungodly heat, the Thunder, and 4.9% unemployment.
I found this forum through the forum runner app, I did a search for "Entrepreneurs" and I found this place. It took me a while to find the actual website, lol, but now I am here and loving what I am reading so far. This seems like a great community.
I have not read the book that this forum is named after, but I ordered it today and I will read it in the next few weeks.
History: I have a B.A. in Psychology (don't ask) and I have had numerous jobs since college including: cable guy, electrician, summer camp director, private tutor, curriculum writer, teacher and I am currently an oil and gas professional, i.e. Landman.
I have found that through all of these different fields I am a teacher. Put me in any field and I learn as much as I can about it and I work at improving company efficiency, helping others, etc.
Landman work is very volatile. We have had steady work for 3+ years from a very large energy company. 2 months ago they cut work to everyone and most firms closed. Mine has lost 75% of its workers, with me hanging on and wondering if I would be next every day I work. I enjoy this work, but there are zero benefits, no paid days off. I have a pregnant wife and no insurance, so I am currently working for something else to get me by for a few months until...
My brother and I launch our sweet business!
We have a program under development that we will be selling to general contractors, architects, and engineers, all in the construction field.
The idea is that the software helps them manage construction site photos, information, prints, etc. and allows them to share among sub contractors, owners, architects, etc. We have one major competitor that hasn't launched yet and we are incorporating a tablet/phone app that we think will change the business.
Our product is aimed at launching first quarter 2013 and we have our beta tester ready to go in a few months.
I am also working on an ebook to help people that are interested in getting into the landman industry (Title work, leasing, etc.). I decided to do this after listening to an SPI podcast on Kindle publishing. This really feels the teaching need that I struggle against daily as I work, now I just pop over to Evernote and type a paragraph of how to do what I just did.
I get asked every few months how to get into the landman business. There is no college major for it and very few training programs (that are all crappy in my opinion). The truth is you have to find a senior land man to train you, but they are usually pretty surely and not fond of questions or new people. I don't have much time in the field, but I cut my teeth on some of the most complex work in our field and I have learned a TON in the past few years because of it.
Anyways, I am excited about this community and I have loved the posts I have read so far about SEO's, e commerce and other great jewels.
I am currently reading "Start Small, Stay Small: A Developer's Guide to Launching a Startup" by Rob Walling. I have learned a ton through it even though I am not a developer and it has really reaffirmed that my brother and I found a good niche to launch in.
I look forward to interacting with all of you and I greatly desire some input from the veterans, so look for threads I have started and let it rain advice!
