There is a new social network ello.co that is getting some good traction right now with a lot of influential users signing up and last I heard they were at around 30,000 requests/hr (server side).

Personally, I think it's going to fail... It kind of looks good but, has no real use case scenario. One of my friends got an invite, signed up and then on Facebook I saw their most recent post "Ok, I got ello... Now what" - All the comments were agreeing with her, not really knowing what to do with it other than it's cool. I see it as a hot chick with 0 personality. I still asked her for an invite anyway.
Why I do care about it: It's growth shows that there is room for a new social network and people want it. That is an exciting growth opportunity. Who knows what's next but, this shows it could actually happen sooner than later.... And even more so that you could be the one that builds it.

I also wanted to add many people are speculating because this service is claiming to be always ad-free, they think it's going to fail. This is a very pessimistic view. Social networks (dating sites, meetup.com, forums, etc) have made profit from having paid membership. Just because it hasn't been done before in this format (to my knowledge) does not mean that it's doomed to fail. This is the type of mentality that hinders innovation. People love to hate and speculate. If it fails it's not going to be for that reason IMO.
What do you guys think of it? Sink or swim?
