I am 22 and hang out around some places in town with kids my age. Always a different group of kids there, all walks of life. I usually ask them about what college they want to go to and what career they're aiming for. Not like I am the judge of this, but it's awesome to see that about 8/10 of them are GENUINELY excited about their life. They are so pumped for the jobs they are going into, and that is a rare thing (Or so I thought!).

However, nearly 9/10 of them say "I don't care about the money".

Now, no matter how much you like something, you need to live. Not that they'll be broke, but they literally explain it to the point of saying - I have NO idea how much I'll be making, like... not even a ball park figure, completely clueless. It's not just that they don't know, but they do not care about how much they'll be living off of. There is also a huge emphasis on "I don't want to be rich", as if it's a negative thing.

What's up with this? It's awesome to see they love what they're doing, but I kid you not, 9/10 of them completely disregard how much they'll be making. How can you completely disregard it? I'm not saying be greedy, but maybe just aware to sculpt your lifestyle?

Yeah they say that dont they? But when they got no money at the end of the month and are begging people for a sub until they get paid they sure do care then.. well atleast until they get paid again.

The young staff I have here are fricken nuts like this, a week or so before payday they are broke as hell. Even if they live with their parents and are working full time hours they still manage to blow it all in 3 weeks. Then they are moaning for a week before they get paid, they nag to be paid sooner and sooner.

So basically what they are saying is this...

"I dont care about money as long as I have some"

I imagine if it's sidewalk or slow lane it's just a matter of role models and how they were taught. Monkey see monkey do! If if parents spending habits are blowing it and living pay check to check, there's a good chance they follow.

if you don't want money you don't want freedom, and since it's unlikely that you don't want freedom, you are making excuses for yourself.
as simple as that

Money should be seen as it - just a tool for getting things done. The more money you have, the more things you can get done. You must realize money is merely a means to an end, and not an end in itself. Being truly rich in life means having many, many other things more important than money, such as more fulfilling and rewarding relationships, good friends, a satisfying career, a happy family, and enjoyment of life to the fullest. It's about living a long and healthy life - both physically and spiritually - being honest with yourself and others, and having strong values and beliefs. And it's about maintaining and emitting positive energy and directing it into every decision you make, and every moment you are alive.

I think most of the thread hits the nail on the head they don't care about money....unless they're broke.

So I'm sure it stems from bad learned spending habits but also a small percentage might be the result of the Demonization of money over the last 20-30 years.
- Films/cartoons/tv all began using wealthy villains in late 80's and strongly in the 90's when asked why they simply said "It's the only group that doesn't get upset or fight back" - growing up that way I'm sure made money look "evil" as the majority of characters they saw on tv that had vast amounts of money were "evil/mean/bad/etc"
- Beyond the media the majority of people who preach "money is evil" are those that don't have it, which is a cyclical line of thinking. Money is evil, I don't have money therefore I am good, to remain good I must not gain more money than I require to survive.

But I'll say this if you don't care about your money then you certainly won't be able to keep it or earn significant amounts of it. Which is something I've learned after growing up in a household as some previous posts outlined.

They say they "don't care" but then when someone else has significantly more than them then that person either "got lucky" or they "should share"
The only thing they DON'T CARE about is doing the work required to attain wealth.

I don't have a highschool diploma (lol, at your sig)

I dropped out cuz I wised up.
I started applying effort for grades and stuff, then looked at the blank expressions of everyone.
Said "this is a waste of my time"
Left

Figured I'd be able to figure something out on my own.
Was not something I ever came to regret.

Worked night shifts for a few years, made use of my days. Travelled after that. Then started building a business I believe in (while travelling still).

You can either be a victim
Or you can take the lead

"I don't care about the money" like you said, isn't taking the lead. You need to know and be aware, or you'll wake up later with regret as your teacher (and its a bad teacher, because it suggests misery)

Suggest a life for yourself.
Choose to be in control of the paycheque

Find peace in that life
Find love
Savor it more than your job

My sig was a comment I found that I thought was hilarious, not serious at all

I see negative beliefs that were adopted by their poor, "hard working" family members.

They don't understand that money is a tool - nothing more. They operate from a poor consciousness, that there is not enough to go around. Yet, with the electronic version of money, millions are probably being printed at this very moment.

There's way more than enough to go around, but to keep people "at the bottom" so-to-speak, working hard for pennies is the way of life and an honest way of fulfilling their life.

Until they gain the courage to challenge their beliefs, and do what it takes to change them, that will be there primary lifestyle.

With tons of people running around saying money is the root of all evil, its easy to understand how people can say they don't care about money.

Tell these same people to work for free and they'd play a different fiddle.
