My name is Sara, I’m 20 years old, and I’m a medical student. So, what led me to choose this path? Well, since I was a child, I’ve been very familiar with the hospital environment. My younger sister was born with an extremely rare and complex genetic syndrome (affecting 1 in 200,000 people), which requires careful and continuous attention. Her condition sparked my curiosity about the human body but also left me with a sense of helplessness because I couldn’t do anything to help her.
Two years ago, she almost died in the operating room from a stroke caused by the open-heart surgery she underwent at just 14 years old. Currently, since may, she has been with my parents at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore due to severe scoliosis. It’s been a very painful experience for the entire family to witness the suffering that one small mutation can cause.
I’ve always read many personal development books, but I’d never really delved into financial literacy. So, what brought me here? Let me try to sum it up as best as I can: as soon as my family landed in Washington to begin yet another of many battles against my sister’s syndrome, my father received an email from the hospital. The planned budget for the surgery had been drastically increased, leaving no room to pack up and head back home. Moreover, while two surgeries were initially planned, she ended up undergoing four.
After many unexpected and difficult-to-justify financial situations, my father found himself in a very precarious position to cover all the expenses. If it weren’t for the fact that he manages a family business, we would have been in an extremely complicated financial situation, possibly even in debt for life.
We ended up losing a lot of money during this process, but what truly matters is that my sister finally seems to be improving, and that’s priceless.
For this reason, I want to build my own path to the “Fastlane.” One day, I don’t want to face the anxiety of not being able to help someone I love due to a lack of money or to have that help come at the cost of being buried in debt. Moreover, I love to travel, and I believe that building a solid financial future will also allow me to experience incredible adventures around the world without limitations.
I’ve had several ideas but ended up discarding them after analyzing them based on the principles of your book. Right now, I’m focusing on society’s needs, particularly in the healthcare field, to try to identify a problem that requires a real solution.
It’s been challenging to find the right idea, but I won’t give up. Thank you for everything I’ve learned from your book, and thank you for inspiring so many people to believe it’s possible to create a better future for ourselves.
