Hard work is not the sole way to "success" or results. Granted... hard work is a requirement for success in my opinion, but hard work itself won't probably yield any significant result.
This reminds of a big thread around here "Learning to program is stupid!".
Let me explain... In that context. IF you pick a programming language and work on it extra hard, you might get good at it (over the years), but without an actionable plan, without applying your knowledge in a new or different way, you won't get anywhere significant.
Sometimes I feel guilty when not working hard but it's a good idea to stop along the way every now and then, take a few steps back and see the big picture. Sometimes you just have to sit and "play" with ideas just for the sake of playing, not to get any sequential or exact result.
This might lead you to a new way of seeing things, and if it doesn't that's ok. You can always try this later when you are in a different mood, environment, surrounded by different people or alone.
