Back in 2003 I worked for a 3rd party fulfillment company. By this time I'd been working for them 5 years and was always taking classes because of the great tuition reimbursement they offered. So the school that I went to was actually not in my town so when they offered computer classes geared toward certifications thru a satellite campus just blocks from my house and the fact that I wanted to learn more about them I jumped on board.
Often before class I would study with two other guys at a small restaurant close to school. Jim, who was a Vietnam vet and Derek who was a year or two out of high school. Sometimes they would go off talking about cars and Derek would mention this idea he had about building and ecommerce site selling aftermarket car parts. He had a domain and couple of pages of ideas and list of drop shippers/ manufactures.
So couple of days before Christmas Derek needs money to buy presents for his girlfriend and parents. He ask Jim and I if he could borrow 250 from each of us. We both told him we would not let him borrow that much. I gave him 100 and gave him two weeks to give it back. Jim said he would give him 100 also but Derek said he needed more and offered Jim his website Idea for 400 so Jim said ok.
Couple of months went by and I stopped after getting my Comptia A+ and Network+ certs. My wife and I just had a daughter and time for her to go back to work.
So fast forward to 2005 I am at my desk at work and see Jim walk by so turns out he had got the business started and been doing his own fulfillment and it was getting to be too much for him. So he was looking for a 3rd party to handle his fulfillment. He averaged 60-80 orders a day which was only 20% of his sales the other was drop shipped.
We went to Best Buy yesterday to get a replacement laptop for my daughter because they could not fix her old one. Guess who helped us pick out her new one....Derek
