Yea, I had it set to not reinvest the dividends (although it still includes them in some of the other numbers which makes it a bit confusing to compare to VTI. If you reinvest the dividends it make it a little easier to compare. Here is that.

When you're in the "passive income" phase of investing, this portfolio rocks. You get the upside, you get the managed monthly income, and you get half the downside. Heck, in some years it does better.

When you're in "compound growth" phase of investing, VTI suffices and generally grows faster.

The comparisons fail to take into account that there are two investor types in play: the average investor saving for retirement (VTI) versus an investor like me who uses the stock market for F*ck You money -- not to build wealth.

I'm thinking about going totally passive in one of my portfolios with just 8 instruments.

Each is in a different sector so there is decent diversification, and all the funds take advantage of price appreciation.

Usually when one seeks income, appreciation takes a hit.

As you can see by the various returns, you not only get the monthly income, but you can take advantage of the market upswings.

These all pays monthly, except XLE.
