patents?

hey folks can anyone tell me a bit more about patents, i have a designed a simple but effective product, well in fact my brother and i did, and i want to know how if you are really fully protected if you get a patent. i have read a few things on the internet but since i am a member of this amazing community i am sure that some of you have patented some of your ideas, and i am interested in cost and effectiveness of patents since i also heard stories that you can never really fully protect your idea from copying and that in the end it will be copied with a tweak or two more and it will look like a completely different product and will not be subject of patent infringement. also cost of a patent, is it true that it can cost from 10.000-50.000 $ ?
now for the patent infringement part which scares me the most, i read some article about it http://www.munich-innovation.com/infringement-of-patents/ and from what i understand is that patent infringement is hard to prove and that the claims a patent application consisted of need to be proven and if the claims that describe the patent do not match the description of the other, patent infringement can't be proven, so does that mean that if i for example have designed a portable tv and someone else has only added an antenna it won't be a case of patent infringement? thank you all in advance
