Ok that was painful I'll stop now. How many times have we gotten an email, a response from a customer, client, or contractor that looked like that mess above? Better yet, who's ever gotten a job application like that?
Lately we've had a mild infestation of bad grammar on the forum. I don't point this out to be the Grammar Nazi (meine Duetsch IST nicht so gut). We live in a digital age. I'd venture to say the vast majority of us on TFL do most of our business through the Internet. Many of us don't have the luxury of face to face interactions with our customers or clients, so how we present ourselves is very important.
Perception is reality
What does that mean? It means that even if you're incredibly intelligent and skilled at what you do, if your customers or clients see the above example, there's a good chance their mental image of you isn't so good. Even worse, their perception is, "if this bozo can't even type a coherent sentence, how the hell is he going to do xyz for me?!"
There's a common meme floating around the Internet, proclaiming how sloppy writing is representative of high IQ. Don't care. How you present yourself is how people will perceive you. Your mom taught you "first impressions are everything". Listen to that advice.
What this boils down to is this. How you do one thing, is how you do everything. If you can be bothered to take the extra 5 minutes to clean up your email, are you going to double check that code you just uploaded to Github? Are you going to make sure your product has been quality checked? Are you going to make sure your coaching information is 100% relevant? I don't know, but when my money is on the line, I'm not going to risk it to find out.
Take the time to polish your communication. Be intelligent, be courteous, be confident. Show the world you mean business. You can't put a fresher pressed suit on your website. Your communication skills are your image to everyone you interact with.
