For the last few days, when I wake up, it’s in a hurry of the security guards waking everyone in the hospital waiting area.
Before I enter the common bathroom for brushing my teeth, the first sound I hear is people making “arrhhh, arrhhh” sound with their throat.
When I enter, what I see is some of them putting their finger into their mouth.
Coming out and brushing outside in the corridor to prevent others’ tap water splashing on me.
Avoiding going to the toilet as long as possible.
Worse yet, some students dressing the wound of another patient when my father is taking food.
Sometimes, the inconvenience my father has to go through when he wants to “pass the motion”, but withholds to avoid inconvenience for others having their meals.
While he needs to walk, I’m scared if he could catch another infection.
It had all started unexpectedly.
In the beautifully saturated, lush green monsoon time of July, my father suddenly had one of his lower limbs swollen. Despite an antibiotic given by a doctor for 2 days, the had swollen and we approached a local hospital.
The surgeon diagnosed it as a common cellulitis and asked us to wait for a day. The next day, he made 3 slits along the limb to remove the fluid and said “I’ve done 90% of the job and you should take him to a Tertiary Center for 2 days of monitoring.” and suggested two highly corrupt, government hospitals around 100 km range.
Instead, we insisted for Manipal, which is one of the best hospitals in India. They are indeed moderately expensive.
There came a shock for me: Based on my father’s health history, I thought it could cost ~$1k-1.2k. To my shock, the costs went over $3k during hospitalisation. Additionally, it went around $500 post hospitalisation.
Again, I had to hospitalise him due to another wound infection during daily dressing by a professional. Now it’s costing $400+ and counting.
Health Insurance for ~$1.2k was messed up by the very trusted agent.
Although I somehow managed to pay off the credit cards, it was not without stress. Because I have some very important upcoming commitments (~$700k) and these values are significantly high in India.
I’m sharing this story here because
I didn’t foresee a financial burden like this before it slapped me. (Financial myopia.)
I thought “I could manage healthcare issues with small amount of funds.” (Financial asceticism)
In could have avoided all these inconvenience inside the hospital, if I could opt for a private room. And that required some serious financial preparation.
Have you experienced any phenomena like these? How did you manage? How did you over come?
