I was reading an article this morning (Economist - https://archive.ph/iI27P) and two quotes caught my attention:
"If science in America has a centre of gravity it is along the Charles River, which snakes between Boston and Cambridge, where MIT, Harvard, world-class hospitals and venture-capital firms all share a riverbank."
"Like a keystone species, Harvard supports research and development far beyond its campus; unsettle Harvard, and the effects will be felt widely. Its federal grants often depend on collaborations among universities and hospitals across the region. Among the economies of America’s 20 largest metro areas, none has a greater share dedicated to the sciences and related industries (see chart). This patch of land is home to more biotech firms than anywhere else in the world."
The idea: targeting venture-backed biotech startups with a highly-focused, branded web development/maintenance/etc services. A lot of these early-stage startups are likely outsourcing to agencies in the area for a premium. Primarily focusing on website design/development, onboarding, maybe even fractional CMO, and other services.
I have the product/method/ability to build a world-class website to support venture-backed teams and scale well into 8-figure range. As federal funding to biotech diminishes, it's possible that these startups will be looking for a more affordable solution - I don't want to compete on price, but I can likely offer a more affordable/higher quality service than what's currently out there (and still be in the realm of $150-$500/hour to start before productizing it). But it won't be without challenges. These startups will likely have someone on their team who can DIY already; new tools like Replit / AI development; WordPress feeling archaic to a young team that might want to build in a more high tech language like React, etc.
I've only had this idea for an hour, after sitting down at Starbucks and drinking my morning coffee and skimming a few articles from both Financial Times and Economist to start off my Monday. I've shared two similar ideas on this forum before - the same basis, but for real estate and fitness.
Next personal steps - I need to become a bit more familiar with the industry and do some research on competitors, look at what they're using to build their websites now, common founder personas, etc.
Next business steps - come up with a name, build a website, throw up a few high quality articles on biotech/and then begin cold calling/emailing/LinkedIn messaging founders directly. Set up in-person meetings directly w/ the founders and maybe even investors.
