Ok, sorry, bear with me, I just need somewhere to start writing my goals and plans, so this is really a thread for my benefit, though I'd love any constructive criticism or suggestions. Will start off basic and I will edit and add detail as things go. Some of it will also be stream-of-conciousness style writing.
My situation, basically, is I am currently working long hours, in a job I hate (that is only barely related to my passion and strength areas), in a very negative environment, and I feel it is affecting me mentally, and physically. On top of that, I now have a young son (4 months) and I just don't see him. I leave before he wakes in the morning, and get home after he is in bed at night. And that is killing me. It also means my partner (who is not working, to take care of our son full time) has to deal with everything which, while not too bad, isn't exactly helping her stress levels etc.
I literally cannot take it anymore.
So, I'm at the point now where I finally have the raw motivation to change things. But I'm in a hard spot - I need to work out how to support our young family, while changing. Due to my work hours at present, options to start something on the side, are not realistic. As it is, I get little enough sleep that I am constantlyy overtired and exhausted.
An excuse? No. Just an obstacle to work around. I know I will find a way.
But it means I need to take a leap, and quit that job. Get my mental state right, and get the time to put my plans into full swing. But, my plan doesn't currently include an immediate-term income generation, which I need to change.
I had considered the option of selling my car to provide funds to live on for a couple of months while I sort things out, but really - at 11 years old with 134k on the clock, looking at what others are selling for, and the fact that I will need *some* sort of transport, it doesn't seem like a viable option.
I have technical skills (network / systems admin, software / web development) I can sell, trading my time for money, but I need to find customers for that. I'm sure I can get some, but how many, and how fast - with little or no advertising outlay. Need to get creative here.
Goals - Short-Term (6 weeks)
1) Get out of current job
2) Get in to a healthier state of mind
3) Support family financially
Goals - Mid-Term (2 - 6 months)
4) Step past "surviving" state financially
5) Be able to spend more time with family
6) Build passive income
Goals - Long-Term (6months+)
7) Get passive income to a point where I can, essentially, retire (though there'll always be new projects).
Plan
Uh-oh, this is where it gets difficult. Not because I can't think of anything, but because I can think of too many things, and I am still feeling my way around what the best approach for me is.
I'm going to launch my own business, doing software development, web development, and other internet-based services.
That's going to take a little time to build up a regular income stream, and initially it will all be trading my time, for income. But, it will be doing something I enjoy, and for a much better return than I would get employed somewhere.
I have all the necessary technical skills to do it, and I am confident I have the business acument to make it successful as well, though that is yet to be proven.
On top of that, I really have for a long time had an interest in real estate, and want to further pursue that path from an investment point of view. Again, I will need to get creative with funding options as, at present, traditional lenders won't want to touch me. I don't have a bad credit history or anything, just not a sufficiently high income or savings.
This post is a work in progress.
