I have picked up third copywriting client, still no website. I don't even have a business name (which I recognize is somewhat risky if this takes off too fast). This is the opposite of where I was just a month ago; fully developed website, no clients. Looking back on it I can see how hard I was spinning my wheels (face palm).
What did I do to get my first few clients?
I went on LinkedIn, looked for people in my target market, and messaged them an offer they shouldn't refuse; free copywriting services in exchange for referrals if they are satisfied with the work.
Why aren't I charging?
Right now, I am still learning, and still testing my performance. Instead of jeopardizing my credibility by selling something that may not be premium quality yet, I'm giving the client the choice of whether or not the quality is adequate to compensate me in referrals.
What is the strategy going forward?
If I get consistently good feedback, this is when the reputation gets rolling. I will then determine a pricing strategy and build more structure around what the service offerings are going to look like. Starting out with less structure is informative because it tells me what I'm already doing well, where I need to improve, and where I shouldn't bother investing any effort (Pareto Principle; 80 percent of effect is attributable to 20 percent of causes).
Once I get through the first round of clients, I will update with the good, the bad, and the butt ugly.
