Hi all - as I announced in my final SAAS post I've been working on something else behind the scenes for the last few months and I mentioned I would be sharing it soon. Now is that time.
Background/Context
Around the time I was becoming disillusioned with my SAAS motives (talked about in aforementioned post) I was starting to really reflect on some conversations I had here in which @AlexisAutotte / @BizyDad / @MJ DeMarco and others pushed back on me raising concerns over Roblox ventures. I came to a point in my mind where I made the realization that starting out with less control (Roblox) was actually going to drive / propel me further than trying to do everything on my own (SAAS) and I could get something up and going in the marketplace of products way quicker. I could eventually move onto/diversify into other platforms if need be after proving I can even attract an audience.
I am a software engineer by day job (I left my career for a few years some years back to start/sell a cleaning business but have been back in the software role since) and I actually got into that trying to learn to code video games as a child. There are many elements of video games that fascinate and scare me. I think it is a force that can be used for good or bad which has kept me from really pursuing it. I think I am at a point now where I want to try to wrangle the medium of the era for good and see how I can blend positive elements into what could otherwise just be an idle brain rot. At this point I am not entirely clear on how I will do this but it will be a driving goal and defining characteristic of the products I produce.
Where I am at as of now / the plan
What I have been working on for the last few months is a MOBA style game (think League of Legends, Dota, etc.). I am not familiar with this genre being tested yet on Roblox but I have seen things like Call of Duty clones and other competitive games find an audience as the Roblox player base has aged and the engine grown.
I am mostly using free models from the Roblox creator store for now and modifying/tweaking them as I can (I am not proficient in the Roblox 3D modeling so at some point I may hire someone if I come across things this can't solve but for an MVP this seems fine and I am moving along).
I previously had unfinished attempts at making games on Roblox some years back so I am somewhat familiar with the flow but now with Github Copilot/Chatgpt this attempt has been so much smoother having something I can just talk to which understands all the Roblox docs and years and years of people asking Roblox development questions on the forums. I am moving much quicker this time around.
I currently have spent a lot of time building out the "plumbing" so to speak but game mechanics are starting to come together. I had one set back for a week where I had to really think outside of the box to get around some limitations of the Roblox engine.
Some screenshots for the visually inclined (one shows an idea of what it currently looks like while running, the other is how it looks while in development mode):
My plan is to launch an MVP of this game by the end of Feb 2025. Any earlier than that and I feel the concept won't be fleshed out enough for player to really get it. Any later than that and I would have sunk way too much time into something that the market may not even like.
--------------
Anyways I want to keep this brief for now - I want this thread to be more a "bring the receipts" than amusing myself sort of thing. Talk to you all more soon.
