Ok so I am no pro but here is one people dont always know, and TC reminded me of that. Most hosting companies allow SSH access, with that there is typically a port open for it. Usually port 22 sometimes 2222.
When you use normal FTP your username and password are sent plain text to your server for authentication, this allows network sniffers to intercept that information.
The nice thing is, you dont have to change much to switch to SFTP which is a secure FTP. Filezilla has the option or you can get CoreFTP or WINSCP as well. All three of those are free. Never use the one site or website back end programs for loading anything.
Ask you host if you have seperate login details for 'SSH' or tell them you want to switch the SFTP, it may be the same login details. In your SFTP client switch it to SFTP instead of FTP and specific port 22 or 2222 and VOILA secure connections.
If this is hard to understand let me know and i will re-write it with pictures.
