I’ve got a BSc in psychology and am currently finishing up an MSc in Coaching Psychology. My journey here has been anything but the fast lane: growing up with a single mum on a low-income, navigating ADHD and dyslexia, and being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis during university. It took me five years to finish my degree instead of three, but I got it done—and I’m proud of that.

For a long time, I followed the traditional “get a degree, get a good job” path. But after reading The Millionaire Fastlane, I had a bit of a mental “click.” I don’t want to wait until my 60s to enjoy life—especially not when my health makes that future uncertain.

That’s why I’ve decided to build something of my own: a mental health app.

My goal is to create a tool that helps people manage symptoms, not just labels—especially those who are stuck waiting for a formal diagnosis or don’t quite “tick all the boxes” for one. I want to take everything I’ve learned from my degrees and make it accessible, useful, and empowering.

Here’s the catch: I need to learn to code.

I did a little Python, HTML, and Linux way back in secondary school, but let’s be real—I mostly remember how cool it felt to type stuff into a terminal like I was in this sci-fi movie... Looking forward to sharing progress and cheering others on too.

Wishing you all an excellent day and a big thanks in advance to anyone who shares tips or guidance!

~ Luna

These attributes are very telling for a psychologist because it's not always what a patient says but how they say it or how they act. Being observant and empathetic is very important.

Now when it developed sentience and the ability to understand the concept of empathy, factual expressions and tone of voice... well, psychologists might just be out of a job... And it might happen soon... I read the book "Scary Smart" by Mo Gawdat recently and it's actually crazy how fast AI is developing.

I recently asked Chat GPT to give me therapy out of curiosity, and it does a pretty decent job, so... while it can't diagnose people yet it might be a good helper in delivering less specialised therapy until the individual can be seen by a human.

I suppose I need to get better at networking.

Psychologists can make decent money in the UK, but only when going private. Unfortunately, it's also a really time-consuming process. So my undergrad took me 5 years (obviously an extra 2 were just because of my health complications) my MSc is taking 2 years because I am doing it part time, and then to be fully qualified, I need to do a 3-year PhD. I have no issue with that, however, the DClinPsy (Doctorate in clinical psychology) is extremely competitive, and on average, only 2% of applicants get accepted each year. Not only do you need competitive grades in your previous degrees, but they also want you to have at least 2 years of work experience in a relevant field and somehow assistant psychologist jobs are even more competitive than the doctorate itself! While doing the PhD they pay £35k per year and the starting salary is £50k per year... It's decent but not amazing. You're hard pressed to get a job that pays over £90k per year unless you work privately or have over 15 years of experience.

For my app idea, I wouldn't need to have my PhD yet because the app wouldn't be about diagnosing people with conditions but instead it would focus on treatment options (based on coaching and therapeutic modalities) that individuals can try to improve their symptoms until they get seen. It would be an app that would make patients' lives more tolerable while they wait for a psychologist or just to give support to those who don't need a psychologist but have minor issues that they want to improve.

Candidly, it's hard to say how complex it would need to be to launch the MVP because I haven't planned it all too well yet. I need to outline the type of symptoms I could cater for and then create a flow chart to map the algorithms the app would have to take... For the MVP I would probably start with common symptoms the general public struggles with, such as:

- Low Mood
- Anxiety
- Overthinking
- Procrastination

Over time, I would get more symptoms added in that are associated with major disorders such as depression, OCD, BPD, Bipolar, ADHD and ASD... I have the DSM-5 and ICD-11 and the BPS's power threat meaning framework so I could fact check the the symptoms and use my knowledge and expertise along with research in the current literature to confirm my recommendations for each symptom in the app...

The process of creating the algorithm itself will be quite time-consuming, let alone learning how to code, so it would be great to find someone to work with... Any suggests on the best way I could do that?

I am new to all this so I still have a lot to learn. I have the subject knowledge and expertise and a whole lot of passion and motivation, however... I'm not the most financially literate ... YET!

Thanks for reading my welcome post and interacting 😀

Why not a blog/vlog/book/course etc.?"
But this makes so much sense.

You could build this fairly simple at first, just one major ailment like for example borderline and then a randomized suggestion for how to snap them out of it.
Once you have user accounts, you can hive them questionaires to build user profiles, so the app starts to ask "what ails you the most today? Your anxiety, sadness, procrastination etc?" After response, the app provides suggestions based on that.

This idea of yours can be very neatly built out, step by step.
I wish you lots of success with it!
Just start small and simple.
Could also be a website at first.

Well done on taking action!

Why not start with something easier first? Work with a psychologist and tweak their website to attract more customers, or do the same for your own practice.

Many people just go to Google or ChatGPT for this kind of advice anyway.
You could build a ChatGPT/LLM wrapper on a website, perhaps with a fine-tuned model.

Making apps seems easy, but it isn’t.
It requires specialized experience in marketing and knowing how to figure out which features to develop, so a co-founder would be crucial. The coding is the “easier” part.

Recently, I’ve started using Mimo to refresh the basics, but I’d love recommendations on better ways to accelerate my learning.

I’m excited to be here, and even more excited to learn from people who’ve taken the fast lane leap.
