My mum, who lives in Scotland and has also read THE BOOK, decided to start making hand made cupcake decorations and selling them on Ebay about 18 months ago, something I didn't agree with at the time. To me it seemed like way to much work for too little gain.
Anyway she was committed and herself and her partner have been full time on this but now they are too outstretched and having to work 7 days a week to keep up with the demand.
She became a powerseller on ebay and eventually some trade outlets started making inquiries, she's had orders to make 10K plus flowers, the biggest one to date is 40,000 sugar paste flowers with more like these to follow. The problem is that the flowers are being hand cut one by one and each flower has about 3 layers to it so you can imagine the time involved!!
I tried to help my mum by designing a multi cutter using 3D printing, but the ergonomics of it just didn't work and cutting them one by one was still better.
Today after a skpye call she wants to concentrate more on the wholesale side as opposed to the small ebay orders which are lots of hassle. She is the biggest seller for these in the UK but there are lots of people trying to copy now which is another reason for scaling up to stay ahead, but to do this they are going to need a machine and they want to be the first to do it. But where do you go to get a machine built that can make cupcake decorations from sugar paste?
BTW, the product she makes is much better quality than the mass produced ones from china or available in the supermarkets and that is why there is such big demand, so she wants to keep this level of quality up which means manufacturing them locally to make sure that happens.
Has anybody got any pointers on how or where to get a machine built? Anything would be much appreciated! Thanks
