Hi everyone, I wanted to quickly let you know about a good experience I had with Quirky.com, and some potential success I might have.
In June 2011, Quirky was searching for product ideas that could benefit from integration with smartphone apps. I quickly drew up some ideas for an app-enabled pet food dispenser so you can still feed your pet if you're stuck at work, class, etc (definitely not intended to replace caring for and feeding your pet yourself). You can see the drawings/submission. You can see my drawings and original submission here. Quirky chose not to go forward with it.
However, eight months ago, I saw a product design that solved the same problem. (It's called Pintofeed.) This stuff happens all the time to people, but even so, I lost some faith in Quirky; they had overlooked my product idea and now there's a whole company based around the product idea. I quit visiting Quirky. I nearly closed my account two months ago because I wasn't using it at all.
It's a good thing I didn't close the account because last Wednesday, I received an email from Quirky saying that someone had submitted an idea for a pet feeder that could be controlled from a smartphone. They brought his idea to the product evaluation stage and it was chosen as a product they are going to move forward with. A couple days later they did additional searches and found my entry from 2011, and are going to give me full inventor credit! That means potential royalties from product sales after design and development. From an idea I had nearly two years ago.
I'm not holding my breath, but I am really excited for this! I was happy they went back and found my old submission in the archives, even if they didn't choose it when I first submitted it. Better late than never. Due to their brand new partnership with powerhouse product company GE (yep, General Electric), I think now is the right time for this product to go into production anyways. I will post updates here as I get them. Have a great weekend!
