So my boss, who I actually like a great deal, just made me furious, and I suspect he doesn't even know why.
Long story short - I currently work an hour from home doing the same kind of IT work I have been doing for 10 years. My boss really wants to keep me, but knows that I'm getting tired of the time suck of spending two hours a day in my car, and looking to make some major life/career changes that start with finding a job closer to home, so he keeps making little comments trying to get me to stay that only make me want to leave.
For instance, today I was talking with him and our Systems Admin, who has been with the company for seven years (literally all of his twenties so far) and has a ton of vacation time accrued. I jokingly asked my boss if the Sys Admin in question could just gift me some of his PTO, since he is sitting on a ton. My boss replied "The reason he has a ton is because he has been here for a long time, unlike some people who would be a fool to leave this company. You're middle aged - you really need to think about your retirement."
A) I'm 35, which I consider close but not quite middle age (though according to my boss, being over 6' decreases my lifespan).
B) He thinks he's got my best interests in heart because the company just became an ESOP.
C) I'M NOT WAITING UNTIL MY SIXTIES TO ENJOY LIFE!
The guy has actually done a lot for me, particularly in helping me rebuild my confidence to a level it has never been at. That said, he is also 35, but happens to be a VP because he grew up in the storage tank industry and happened to go to the same church as the founder of the company. He's a hard worker, but very disorganized, and seems to think that even without those two very key life hand-outs, he would still be VP.
Like I said, I know he means well, but slowlaners will go FAR to try and keep you riding with them, and they will think they are doing the right thing when they do it!
