I asked the eCommerce Fuel guy on Reddit how to create and sustain rapid growth in the first months of business. On the Internet, the name of the game is rapid growth, unlike in real estate and B+M businesses where it's preferable to move slowly.

His answer: "It was about two weeks after launch - and a few days after I started running my PPC campaign - that I received my first customer. As anyone who starts their own business will attest to, you will NEVER forget that first customer / order!
For getting an eCommerce store up-and-running profitably, I'd recommend:
1) Getting a basic store launched as quickly as possible 2) Driving short-term traffic with PPC to gauge interest / viability and start to learn about your customers 3) Once you have a month or two of experience with your products and customers, THEN invest in building a killer site with your new expertise 4) Focus heavily on SEO, marketing and outstanding customer service"

Clarification:

Step One: Minimal Viable Product. Make what you can sell and get it up FAST.
Step Two: Getting the word out. Drop some cash in PPC campaigns. ALSO: Spend your days direct calling/mailing potential customers. See what people need.
Step Three: Now you got money rolling in. Invest some money and time building an experience for people who visit your site. Optimize for speed and conversion. Put in the features and fix-ins that will help your customers find what they need.
Step Four: Self-explanatory.

This stuff sounds exactly like things that biophase said, which is why it stood out for me. Now I have a direction. hopefully you guys do, too.
