TLDR!
Hi all,
Great to be digging through the forum again and speaking to some of you on messages.
I have recently been made redundant (last one in, first one out type of thing) and don't have the time to be pondering too much on idea after idea. Bills to pay, etc... I'm feeling a bit lost.
Whilst looking for a new job, I want to dive into my current skillset and attempt to solve some problems in those areas and scale.
Some food for thought from you would be really helpful.
Before I go on, background / strong points are in the following two areas that I may consider following up on:
1. Running music events (somewhat successful pre-pandemic side hustle) & music production.
2. Dabbling with some content creation / light online marketing for family business in travel and tourism industry (really enjoyed this).
I hear a lot about people running agencies these days and some appear to be doing well. Though, I am skeptical about this (as one of the folks from Y Combinator said, avoid "tarpit" ideas... but if I find a strong enough problem that needs solving, maybe something can be done, doesn't need to be an agency of course)
The marketing side of things does peak my interest and I do enjoy sales, networking after being raised heavily in that environment. I am considering going down the path of some kind of agency, but it doesn't need to link with the music side of things at all, just any sort of problem. I love lifting others up and building things even if I am not the most skilled in providing the actual service / job being sold (though I am willing to learn how to deliver it if required).
Should one even consider going down an agency route if they are NOT confident in providing the actual service themselves but are semi-decent in other areas such as sales, scaling, networking?
I am a big believer in believing in your product, so I need to be sure I can do this before going all-in. For context, my Grandpa ran a successful car repair company and hired a few people to actually deliver the service whilst he scaled and maintained presence in other areas like advertising, sales, taking cars back and fourth for MOT's at times. He never touched the motors other than some car washing, so I'm optimistic. Another very "out there" example is my football team (Chelsea) have been going through a nightmare recently with new ownership, but they have been bringing in guys who know the industry and advise one of the guys with a majority stake. So I'm thinking it can be done, but how is the question.
Please chime in if you have anything to add or counter what I am saying. Is this even feasible, the whole agency thing? I have zero clue on where to begin here.
I might not even go the route of B2B, but it's an option.
What would you do / have you done in this type of situation?
Thank you for taking the time, I will read your responses carefully.
