This was once somebody's dream. This is the door to the penthouse of the class A office space in the building where by office has been located for several years. Behind these penthouse doors laid the dreams of the people who leased this space, and the money of the investors who funded the dream.
Here's what it looks like today.
What you can't see in these pictures is the human toll that lies hidden in these walls. The dreams, the sweat, and the people that once occupied this space. Their story didn't have a Cindarella ending.
The opposite of this is what Sam Walton used to preach. The way one of the world's largest companies was built was by ruthless expense controls, minimized operating expenses, and as little as possible deployed into depreciating or non-recoverable assets. No penthouses. No prima donnas. Minimal expenses. No gold doors.
When I first started down my current path, I wanted to build an empire. I used to visit this floor, simply to look in at the gold doors and penthouse view that weaved together the fabric of this entrepreneurs dream. "Some day" I said, "these gold doors will be mine." We have a tendency to look past the fact that the gold doors might not really be gold, and they are a rent check or two from being back in the hands of their rightful owners. All that glitters is not gold.
Over the last few years, my vision has changed. Far from wanting an empire, I want to fade into obscurity. I want my office to be on a park bench at the beach, watching my daughter play in the surf. A call routed to a seat on the boat, or a fax sent into a company that exists only in the cloud. Minimizing physical presence, maximizing worldwide exposure taking full advantage of a workplace and revenue stream that didn't exist in our parents generation. To anyone that doesn't have behind the scenes access, it's business as usual. To anyone that gets to see the Wizard behind the screen, it is anything but.
Do you know that right now, while you are punching a clock at your day job, there are fastlaners snorkeling the great barrier reef? Would you trade your cubicle for that kind of office? If you had $10k to spend on an office next month, would you rather have a glass door, or a glass bottom boat?
Automated. Outsourced. Virtual.
My objectives have changed. The end game hasn't, but the tools have. The goals have. And the means to get to the end can look like what ever you want it to look like.
