The Commandment of Scale
"If you want to climb the heights to financial freedom you need a business that SCALES into the sky … in other words, it will need to reach new heights to reach the masses. If you can reach a million people, you will be a millionaire." pulled straight from MJ's book.
This really resonated with me and my small CPA business when I read the book. I quickly recognized that my reach was super limited with my current setup, so I decided to convert my tax prep business online.
The biggest issue i hear from customers is the fact that wherever they go for tax filing, whether to a CPA or H&R block etc., it's a guessing game on what their final tax bill will be. I've worked with Big 4 accounting firms and Top tier income tax filing firms, and no one can give you a good estimate on their fees upfront. I agree, many tax returns are complicated and impossible to pinpoint the final fee; my focus here is the simple tax returns, the 1040-EZ, the standard deduction returns. I did some research and streamlined that process, and will be offering it online for a low fixed rate which will be disclosed up-front and the same for everyone that qualifies.
I am in the process of finalizing the site where customers will be able to buy, pay, submit documents, and retrieve their tax returns, all done by a CPA for a very affordable price. I do have over 700 clients that I service from my Brick & Mortar office in NJ, but it lacks the scale and time commandments. Eventually, the time commandment will come into play where I can have data entry employees enter the data and me do a review of the final product before submitting.
My challenge in the next two months is to spread the word and get some publicity and links to the site and the service. Definitely going the social media route, FB, Twitter, Google+, etc. That should generate some nice buzz. I will also be reaching out to some finance geared blogs to write articles on the service and alert their followers. I have no idea how to best approach them but will keep you posted here on what worked and what to avoid. I'm also working with a local SEO firm to figure out a few keywords that would generate the most relevant traffic.
Any other suggestions to market the site and the product are greatly appreciated. What has worked for you in your business ventures?
I may share the website for some critique, but not sure whether I want to do that yet until the proof of concept is completed.
