Hello Everyone. This is my first post. I just finished reading MJ's book and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's awesome that he presents such genuine information in a entertaining, no BS manner. The parts that really hit home was the need for scale and that it's going to take a lot of hard work. I always had thoughts of large scale in the back of my head, but after this read I will not be entertaining any slow lane business opportunities that can't be scaled to the masses or be of great magnitude..In which case they would be fast lane.
So my question is.. I want to start a lead gen site similar to limos.com (different industry of course) but i'm completely unclear on the specifics of how such a site works, both technically and logistically. On the technical side my cousin runs a design firm that is capable of creating professional sites. I'm also starting to learn html/css then php so I can hopefully help with some maintenance after the site is launched. He estimates such a site could run as much as 30k to get off the ground and also warned me that marketing and advertising could easily approach 100k+ if I were to do it right(with the cost of adwords and to get enough traffic). Does that seems about right?
On the logistic side i'm wondering how lead gen works with pricing, ect... Say hypothetically the site links people with flat tires to service providers that change tires (NOT ACTUAL idea but has some similarities)
1) How would I go about getting service providers to be involved with my site? Would I have to call thousands of service providers across the country to explain my site? sounds like a TON of work. I don't mind work, but that alone could take months!
2) Leads would be generated by customers filling out a form and then getting back three or four quotes in their service area... How do prices work for the leads? The service it self would cost couple hundred. Can I charge for converted leads? How would I know if the lead was converted? What if no leads are converted?
3) I'd like to provide instant quotes. What about fluctuating prices? What if the customer picks a provider and that provider is not available for some reason? Would it be possible to integrate payment on the site?
Thanks for hearing me out. From the book I gathered many questions will be answered after launching and that action is just as important or more important then the idea itself, but also that educating yourself can help prevent failure. So much great info in that book Thanks in advance for the collective knowledge of this community and any light it can shed on these concerns. All input is welcome.
