I’m well on my way to being a slowlane success story.
My wife and I have relatively secure well-paying careers, are maxing out our 401ks, will be debt free by the end of this year, and are well on our way to being millionaires well after we’re young enough to fully enjoy it.
I made a career change to software developer nearly ten years ago with the nebulous goal of eventually working for myself but, in the meantime, I’ve been comfortable enough with the 9 to 5 to not make much entrepreneurial progress.
My biggest problem has been focusing on events over process - I’m great with process when it comes to writing code or managing projects but, when it comes to anything else, my pattern has been that if I can’t do it quickly then it’s not worth doing. Despite that, I’ve actually built up a consistent passive income from my side projects – it’s all based on inefficiencies in search algorithms (events) that will eventually be corrected but, for now, they’re generating income.
The tipping point for me was my most recent employer going out of business. That makes two employers in a row that disappeared on me (the one before that was sold) and, although I was able to find another job quickly, a couple of points really hit home for me:
I knew that my short-term mindset was the problem when it came to my personal projects but I didn’t know how to fix that so I went on an Amazon buying spree for books on motivation, goal setting, etc. in the hopes that something there would kick me into gear (looking for an event again I now realize).
That’s when I came upon The Millionaire Fastlane and reading it was a revelation – I learned exactly how I ended up where I am and how I need to approach my future if I want to change the results I’ve been getting.
Like any habits, it’s going to take time and consistent effort to overcome years of conscious and subconscious internal and external conditioning but I’m committed to the path and I’m glad this forum exists to give and receive support and encouragement from like-minded people.

- For the most part, the people running the companies I’ve worked for have been very successful almost despite themselves. Poor code (at least when I got there – most of my work has been re-designing e-commerce and content management platforms), poor project management, poor marketing, and poor customer service but still managing to run operations that brought in seven figures per month.
- I’m good at what I do and I get things done so I end up accumulating a lot of responsibility wherever I work. But, that responsibility doesn’t equate to more equity in the business or, other than arbitrary bonuses, sharing in the profits I help bring in. In fact, in the last company I worked for, it seemed like I cared more about the success of the business than the owner himself.
