After a month or so of negotiations, waiting, and biting my nails, I have 10 samples of a product (a collection of 4 items) that I'm ready to take to the internet - to sell, to try to recoup most of my initial investment (samples are expensive) and to, most importantly, confirm market demand before I even consider considering to order more product (likely a jump to 100 or 200pcs depending on how well these sell).
I'm not reinventing the wheel, here - I simply was looking for a product on Amazon and eBay, and I couldn't find it. Then, my heart pounding at the thought that - "Hey, maybe I've finally found my product to start a business! If I want it and no one else has made it, I can be the first!" - I got in touch with manufacturers on Alibaba, and, $350USD later, I have some samples sitting in bedroom.
My product is a set of four kitchen tools - all of which are sold individually, but NO ONE has thought to put them together in a kit. I made sure to only buy stainless steel tools, for a USP of quality, affordability (it'll be cheaper than buying the four pieces individually) and convenience.
I have two questions for anyone who is reading and/or potentially interested in following my progress along:
1. One of the items has a series of sharp blades on the bottom - if someone was to cut themselves with these, would I be held liable? I was thinking of making a plastic cover to put onto the bottom to cover these when not in use - would this be a sufficient solution? Is it even necessary?
2. My plan was to use eBay to sell the first 10 - these specific pieces aren't 100% ready to be applied to a brand (I have a brand, logo idea, packaging plans etc.) as, since they are samples, they are not branded with my logo and company name (and one of the items isn't exactly the color I would prefer).
Is it smart to begin with eBay, and then, if demand is confirmed, build an e-Commerce website and create an Amazon store, utilizing advertising and reviews to sell my product once I am 100% satisfied with the quality?
Thanks so much for reading, and I look forward to your responses! In the meantime, I'll be taking pictures, copywriting a product description, and keeping myself on track using the tips @LightHouse gave us all in his 'Laser FOCUS' thread!
