I have been working part time at the post office for 12 years. In that time, i went to College, University, went travelling and also spent the past 7 years working on my business which i am very happy with and i am confident that in one year, i will be making a very good wage if things go accordingly. I am about 75% - 90% sure that my business will suceed. There is this niggling doubt however. I need to leave my job sooner or later whether my business succeeds or fails. I graduated in Advertising just over two years ago and as every year passes by, it will be very hard to gain employment in that field. My business is not related to advertising so I cannot even put that in my cv, should I seek employment.
The offer they made me at work for voluntary redundancy is £9,000, which is not far off one years wage. However, the hours are perfect for me and the job is an absolute doddle and i am able to survive on this wage currently because i live at home and the hourly rate is reasonably good for the sector. Ironically...if I did stay and refuse the redundancy payment...It would allow me to focus more on my business and not stress about being unemployed or the pressure to get a job I don't want in the mean time while I focus on my business. I could put more hours on the business in the first few months, but If it doesn’t take off...I would need to seek employment sooner or later and the job I have now allows me 8 hours work on my business quite comfortably. I actually go to work at the post office for a rest. Logic says leave because I want to leave to gain a job in advertising should my business fail and not leave the gap between graduation and employment in that field too much longer. But something is stopping me. I would feel much more stressed if I did leave because I would have the burden of looking for a job if I fail with my business. And I may not afford to be as picky with the job type...whereas if I stay in my part time job, I can work on my business without stress and if I fail...I can look for the job I really want while I work at the post office. Sorry for the long message. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks ☺
